An extraordinary artistic achievement,  Eaglemoss Publications created a brilliant lineup of 96 chesspieces  (crafted from lead, hand-painted to an exacting degree, and matched with base 'ranking' runes  superimposed over Elvish script) of a diverse range of characters from director Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema's Academy Award-winning motion picture trilogy THE LORD OF THE RINGS, adapted from J. R. R. Tolkien's literary masterwork. The White pieces represent the Forces of Light while the Black symbolize the Legions of Darkness. The chesspiece collection consists of three successive LOTR-themed chess-sets: thefirst  set ~ appropriately titled The Final Battle ~ is a striking representation of Jackson's spectacular final film adaptation of Tolkien's concluding work,  The Return of the King, which tells of the dramatic events leading up to the last epic battle for Middle-earth; the  second set emerges as more of an overarching Jacksonian treatment of The Characters and Creatures of Middle-earth ~ that is, as this visionary New Zealand film-maker and his remarkable team of world-class artisans have come to visualize Tolkien's universe; finally, the third   The War of the Ring  chess-set brings to the fore even more of the diverse array of Tolkienian characters from the Grand Master of Fantasy's magnum opus  ~ again, as these have been interpreted for film by Jackson & Company and spotlighted in key scenes throughout the film trilogy. The chesspiece bases of the third set are marked by having different colors than those of the first two sets: the Forces of Light (White) are distinguished by their bronze bases, while the bases of the Armies of Darkness (Black) are silver. Completing the three-set collection is an elegant, ornately sculpted polystone / resin  chessboard  (52x52cm/21x21in) engraved with the map of Middle-earth and bounded by a beautifully (Elvish  script) embellished gold border-trim, red velvet-lined chesspiece storage boxes  (in classical gold  and silver ), and individual 12-page chesspiece character guides  stored in strikingly designed 'The Final Battle'   binders  ~ the cover artwork of which encapsulates perfectly the epic nature of both Tolkien's and Jackson's stories. In addition to detailing the role of each chesspiece-portrayed character in the final conflict of the War of the Ring, the richly illustrated guides describe the role of the featured 'ranked' chesspiece itself and its moves, simple chess strategies, and present as well a history of chess through the ages, plus fascinating facts about chess variations from all over the world. Beyond all of this, additional gold-tinted boards for the chesspiece sets that have followed the release of the original set (more basic in their nature and build) were specially designed and created for series subscribers; each is stylishly and functionally unique in its own right (the last being a board designed for three players). Six  special collector's companion-piece models   (The Balrog, Morgul Lord on Fell Beast, Mûmakil, Treebeard, Aragorn on War-horse, and the Armoured Troll) were also issued for LOTR Chess Collection subscribers.
